Alpaca has been considered a premium luxury fiber since the animals were first bred by the Incca Indians in South America. Today Alpaca fiber is still relatively rare compared to other wools and combines many wonderful qualities in one fiber. Alpaca fleece is warmer and lighter than wool, yet stronger and far more durable. Many who are allergic to wool, can wear alpaca without problems. Alpaca fleece doesn't contain lanolin like sheep's wool, so it requires very little attention prior to processing. Alpaca fiber is fine between 16 and 30 microns, and its hollow, insulating core give alpaca fiber a smooth, velvet, and light weight softness. The very first shearing of an alpaca provides a cloud soft fiber that is even more prized.
